Why did I start a Healing Touch practice?

Oh, for so many reasons! Let me begin with my childhood. As a child, I created a lot of “waves” in my family (like the big, disruptive ones that no one really asks for or wants). I could FEEL how the loved ones in my life felt without them telling me. This was uncomfortable and confusing for others in my life, and therefore very uncomfortable and confusing for me as well. I didn’t understand why it was so invasive for my Mother at times (as an example) because I literally did not know that others didn’t sense the way I sense…

Fast forward through learned coping mechanisms, lots of therapy… I find myself seated in my college nursing program class. Fall semester, first semester of Nursing curriculum. I wanted to quit the competitive nursing program I worked so hard to get into.

I sat with my academic advisor and said, “It’s just not what I expected nursing to be.” My Old Soul wasn’t happy with the modern, task orientation, pharmaceutical heavy model of nursing. She wisely told me to finish the semester and reassess. Soon after, a mentor (and Angel, truly) gave a guest presentation on what she called at the time “alternative medicine” – what we now call “integrative medicine”. I felt like I had been struck by lightning. The message “you are in the right place” was very clear.

This guest presenter Mary Johnson, PhD and Professor Emeritus at St. Olaf College, and I began a friendship and mentorship that continues today. My path began to make more sense.

I have now earned the title, Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, which required thousands of hours of study and practice. I took classes in Minnesota, Hawaii and California. I worked with a mentor for a year, meeting regularly and discussing over 100 Healing Touch sessions. I have now offered over 1000 Healing Touch sessions to individuals.

This was all work I was doing while I was also graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College with my Nursing degree, earning my Holistic Nurse Baccalaureate – Board Certification, working as a Nurse, and training to become a Registered Yoga Instructor (with 400 hours of teacher training). I say this to share that I have worked really hard to go down this path that my Soul was inspired by.

I also share this to shed light on the question, “why did I start a private Healing Touch business?”. Being an entrepreneur in the world of health and wellness has always been my path. Working as a Nurse in the Postpartum world is part of the path, but my big S Self goal is to be a catalyst for re-incorporating the spiritual aspects of health into our understanding of ourselves. I have been on this path a very long time, and I will continue to push forward.

I believe that a better model, a better culture, for health care is within reach.
